South Coast sunset soundtrack stalwarts, Higher Love Recordings, pair up with fellow Balearic Brightonian, Perry Granville, aka Hotel Pellirocco`s Dave Sibley, for a proper pukka 6-track piece of plastic. Two tunes, Sailing Ships and New Arp4, slipped out, digitally, a couple of years back, but now they’ve been dusted off, polished, and given a stellar set of remixes, before finally being pressed to vinyl.
The former is a chugging, chunk `o funk, dynamite for darker dance-floors. A boisterous mid-tempo bouncer that pits wild, wonky, unpredictably pitched chords against twisting tones, gated shouts, and sampled `80s American network news footage. Early reports on this “fad” called “house music”. For the rework, Sean Johnston and Duncan “Tici Taci” Gray join forces, as Hardway Bros Meet Monkton Uptown. The dynamic duo delivering an epic dose of post-punk dub, that (Jah) wobbles to a lithe, live, bass-line. Its journey electrified by bubbling, effervescent sound-effects, ricocheting rimshots, and thunder / lightning strikes. A mediative melodica melody topping everything off.
The latter is a glacial, kinda gothic, wall of sound, set to a sleek electro beat. Ethereal ghosts inhabiting its machines, and shaken by explosions of cymbals. Towards its close Mr. Sibley switches on some serious TB-303 snarling. Break Mode takes the acid and diaphanous voices and fixes them to a loop of The Winstons B-boy /drum & bass classic, Amen Brother. Further adding shoegaze-esque 6-string action to create an emotional monster. Leeds` Mr. BC - real name Bob Salmond - constructs something equally anthem-like, but significantly more sleazy, by introducing a huge, resounding, reverberating thump. The rock guitars, rolling piano, and edgy menace of this wee small hours strut, had me personally thinking of butch, leather-clad gear, such as The Skatt Brothers` Walk The Night. A stunning, sparse, stripped-back, spaced-out reimagining from Justin Robertson`s Deadstock 33s completes the package. Driven by beatnik bongos, and shot through with spinning, spiralling strings, haunted by John Barry-like harpsichord - think The Persuaders TV theme - Justin’s jam is suffused with a sort of cinematic end-credit drama. A super suitable setting for the song`s found / sampled line, “How many can say they walk away the hero.”
